Visitor's Center
Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Back to projects
Rotterdam is one of the world's largest shipping harbors; the harbor's influence is undeniable in the city. The harbor front possesses enormous potential as an unique urban element. Kop Van Zuid has developed a master plan for the area. As part of the development my task was to design a visitor's center and observation deck for the harbor front.
While visiting and researching Rotterdam, I became fascinated with the struggle between the harbor and the growth of the city. The urban fabric had difficultly creating a contiguous dialogue because of the juxtaposition. The sculpted form of the visitor's center speaks to this division. The angular form cuts through the fluid form highlighting this tension in the city.

The harbor area is currently undergoing an urban revitalization. Building the tourist information center along the harbor front allows opportunity to further growth. The garden observation deck and outdoor cafe seating allow clear visibility of the Willemsburg and Eramus bridges that expressively define the harbor edge.
